Maria Francesca Fontanella graduated in law – with full marks and a specialization in legal practice – from the ‘Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore’ in Milan, after defending her dissertation in criminology entitled: “Il problema della corruzione nel diritto penale comunitario” (The corruption issue in EU criminal law), supervised by Prof. Gabrio Forti. While still at university, Maria Francesca Fontanella attended the Katholieke Universiteit in Nijmegenthrough the Erasmus Programme.
She has worked for the firm since 2000.
She has been a member of the Milan Bar Association since 2003 and has had the right to appear before the Supreme Court (Corte di Cassazione) since 2016.
Maria Francesca Fontanella has gained relevant experience in corporate criminal law, having followed criminal lawsuits relating to corporate and financial crimes, bankruptcy crimes, crimes against public administration, crimes against property through embezzlement as well as criminal liability in the medical and health-care field.
Similarly, she has acquired in-depth experience in matters of criminal liability of employers regarding occupational injuries and illnesses, with a special emphasis on asbestos-related diseases, having participated in the most important lawsuits that have taken place in Italy in the last decade.
She also provides out-of-court assistance in the same areas in addition to entity liability.
Maria Francesca Fontanella has been a member of the Gruppo di Ricerca Criminologica (GRC) and a member ofCSGP – Centro Studi “Federico Stella” sulla Giustizia penale e la Politica criminale, at the ‘Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore’ in Milan,sinceits establishment.
In this connection, she has collaborated–among other things – on the project called: Esperienze d’avvio degli organismi di vigilanza ex D.lgs. 231/2001 (On setting up supervisory boards pursuant to Legislative Decree no. 231/2001), whose results have been published in two volumes.
She has been a keynote speaker at conferences, seminars and round tables.
Since 2011 she has held a teaching assistantship in corporate criminal law at the Specialization School for legal professions at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan.
She was an adjunct professor in the postgraduate programme in corporate criminal law at the School of Law of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan (teaching courses in criminal labour law) in the 2013-2014 academic year.
Since 2014 she has been a lecturer on the two-year programme in Techniques and deontological ethics for the registration of court-appointed defence lawyers run by the Milan Criminal Lawyers Association.
Maria Francesca Fontanella has held legal clinics at the School of Law of the ‘Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore’ of Milan since the 2014/2015 academic year.
She is a member of the legal medicine editorial board of the Rivista Italiana di Medicina Legale e del Diritto in Campo Sanitariojournal(new series).
